Try to repurpose, borrow or upcycle rather than buy new.

The scale at which we can each adhere to this guidance will vary, but we can all commit to the best that we can do. This guidance is to provide inspiration and tools for change, not judgement.

Talking openly about the challenges and solutions around the topic is a great start.

Planning and being organised can frequently prevent last-minute decisions that are the most detrimental to the Theatre Green Book objectives.

Some of these points incur cost, others will reduce.

Pre-Production

Holding meetings online not only reduces travel impacts, but makes meetings more accessible. Plan the considerations required for online meetings so they are a positive experience for everyone (test the technology, share screen functions etc).

Detailed planning and achievable deadlines will reduce the ‘rush’ and ‘last minute’ ordering and travel. It will also reduce costs for production.

Include time to research if any of the required kit (especially practicals and consumables) are already owned (maybe in storage) and can be retrieved or loaned rather than commissioned or purchased.

Try to coordinate deliveries or plan routes with multiple collections at off-peak times to reduce impacts. Create these plans as part of a pre-production strategy across multiple departments.

Encourage teams to consider whether documents (meeting minutes, plans, etc) need to be printed and if so, encourage printing only at final stage to avoid wasted draft prints. Double-sided printing on recycled paper should always be our default.

Consider environmental goals alongside financial and creative aims at all production.

In some cases, electronic scripts may be a more environmentally-friendly option. We should strive to facilitate the best option for the environment, including the consideration of long-term wastage and electronics production.

Transportation

Consider the benefits of having onsite storage to prevent multiple delivery runs.

Consider storing spares onsite, possibly shared between multiple productions.

If possible, coordinate deliveries with other departments or nearby venues/productions.

Standardise equipment and therefore consumables/batteries/tape used across departments to reduce individual deliveries to site.

Consider environmental impacts of delivery alongside cost of the order.

Ask suppliers about their transport logistics and request more carbon-friendly methods where possible.

Consumables

Investigate the products already available in the building, eg wardrobe scraps as cleaning rags.

Endeavour to use and investigate environmentally friendly cleaning products and practices.

Invest in reusable products where possible.

Interrogate use of plastics in packaging and try to avoid single-use products.

Invest in reusable cable ties, paper tapes and bungees rather than pvc Paint and chalk pens can be used for spike marks.

Where consumables are left at the end of a production, they should be carefully stored for reuse or sent to another production to eliminate unnecessary These items should be logged with management to ensure their future use.

Where consumables are essential, they should be purchased in coordination with other departments and in bulk to reduce delivery impacts.

All batteries should be rechargeable and recycled at the end of their life-span.

Any non-rechargeable batteries should be used for head torches or similar uses after their ‘show life’ before recycling.

Microphones should be repaired or reterminated wherever possible.

Microphones should be regularly maintained and stored in dry boxes where necessary to preserve their lifespan.

All cable terminations for microphones, comms headsets should have strain relief to preserve their lifespan.

Equipment

Equipment should be maintained regularly to preserve its lifespan.

Repairing or modular replacement should be the primary focus, rather than replacement.

Research and invest in equipment and tools that are easier to repair or are Seek out manufacturers who support the repair of their kit.

Teams and technicians should receive training in repairs and maintenance in addition to operation of equipment.

Racks should be built with adequate spacing to reduce fan workload.

Consider energy ratings of equipment when specifying.

Efficient overnight power states should be considered for equipment Ensure racks that need to be left on are isolated so that unnecessary power isn’t being used overnight.

Invest in equipment that can be repaired, eg modular equipment with generic parts.

Use LED or low wattage lamps wherever possible and consider if they need to always be on – could timers be built into the system?

Where equipment is being hired, consider the environmental policies and practices of the hire company. Consider the proximity of their premises to your site and the environmental impacts of delivery and ongoing support. Could electric vehicles or a carbon-neutral courier be used?

Where equipment is single-use or purchased, consider its recycling or disposal at the point of purchase. Plan its life after the run of the show.

Keep up-to-date paperwork of the equipment in stock, including repair information and Information about stock will reduce unnecessary purchasing and costs.

Waste

All waste should be recycled, stored or disposed of safely and according to instruction. Allow extra time for sorting and separating of materials.

Enquire if manufacturers will accept returns of expired or damaged equipment for repurpose or refurbishment.

Consider the donation of materials and equipment to other theatres or productions. Older technology for one is an upgrade for another. If someone else can use the item productively, extending its life, this is a win for both the industry and the environment.

Keep inventories of materials or equipment in storage. This could include photographs, manuals, dimensions, repair instructions.

Include lifespan and disposal of equipment in inventories. Regularly interrogate equipment with limited lifespans and consider alternatives.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” module_alignment=”center” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_button button_url=”https://www.theatregreenbook.nl/sustainableproductions-toolkit/” button_text=”Back to The Toolkit” button_alignment=”center” _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_button][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Theatre Green Book PRODUCTIONS Toolkit – Technical Sound With thanks to the Association for Sound Design and ProductionFirst Principals The greenest product is always the one that we already own.
