The below list is not exhaustive, and different organisations will make different decisions about what materials they do or don\u2019t recommend &#8211; but please see below for a starting point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have any suggestions, or further information on any of the materials, please do get in touch. Or source polystyrene from suppliers who recycle it like companies such as <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.robocarv.co.uk\/general-clean\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robocarv<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider alternatives such as mycelium, or Composta Bloc. Try to save offcuts and waste to be sent to a company who can recycle it, which reduces amount going into landfill.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could also try experimenting with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoresins.co.uk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Eco Resins<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PVC (especially check if any large items like projector screens are PVC)<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-biodegrable and can release microplastics. There are also concerns of impact on human health.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For screens, can a reused, or cloth material be used?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to avoid using vacform as much as possible. Could stencilled canvases be used for brick work? Could CNC timber moulds be used instead? Try and source second hand PVC doors and windows on scenery.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virgin steel<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steel has a high carbon impact to make and is often shipped a long way<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a lot of modular scenery items out there, and companies you can hire steel structures from if needed. Use these to form the main bulk of your flats\/stages\/revolves etc and then make timber\/steel infills as necessary.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tropical hardwood<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tropical hardwoods can be associated with deforestation<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for FSC accredited wood, use reclaimed wood, and research where your timber is coming from. Try to avoid Far Eastern plywood.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harmful chemicals including aerosols, parabens, and triclosan<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chemicals in cosmetic products can have negative effects on environmental and human health.<\/span><\/td>\n<td>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a wide range of cosmetic products which avoid harmful materials and use non-aersol application such as gels or solid products. Use the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yuka.io\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Yuka app<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help guide you on this.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid spray paints as much as possible. When necessary, try to use water-based sprays.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also some solvent-free adhesives available such as <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.algeos.com\/renia-aquilim?srsltid=AfmBOooGmBW5T036JpeBHhUeemBZaAvoXtDIB2kgltK0arktjPFFBarW\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aquilim<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For adhesive filler, the<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.screwfix.com\/p\/evo-stik-gripfill-solvent-free-grab-adhesive-white-350ml\/64958?gclsrc=aw.ds&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=22605979379&amp;gbraid=0AAAAAD8IdPzIqDSi2ml6QcHG5vCXj6ej6&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjw8eTFBhCXARIsAIkiuOzwLLFEP8F_miqaVrpU9ugUOFLNSXPa7Lka31uZC_egN10N_-LrStQaAvDAEALw_wcB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> yellow Gripfill<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is less harmful than the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skirtinguk.com\/product\/green-gripfill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid environmentally harmful detergents, like 1,4-Dioxane, Sodium Laureth Sulphate, Bleach and Formaldehyde.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chemicals in laundry or cleaning products can have negative effects on environmental and human health<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for Eco-label certification or similar. Seek inspiration from <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nancybirtwhistle.co.uk\/my-books\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nancy Birtwhistle<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on green\/eco cleaning products, methods and practices.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clothing bought from fast fashion companies<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast fashion clothing can be hard to trace the source of, contain cheap plastic materials, and concerns over the working conditions in which they are made<\/span><\/td>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/goodonyou.eco\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Good on You<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be a starting point for researching clothing companies.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helium balloons<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If they end up released outside they can cause major issues for wildlife. There is a finite amount of Helium in the world.<\/span><\/td>\n<td>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paper decoarations can often achieve the same effects for party and celebration asthetics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foil balloons can be recycled using the right waste stream. Latex balloons are biodegradable but do not hold gas as successfully so end up needing to use more. Where possible, avoid using helium. If it\u2019s vital for a show for a balloon to float\/fly, use balloon gas which is a mix of CO2 and helium \u2013 and then opt for the lowest quantity of helium.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High VOC paints<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volatiles Organic Compounds are chemicals that evaporate into the air during and after painting and can have negative impact on human and environmental health<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low-VOC paints are available, or lime-based paints.
