New Goal for Green Theatre Production: 60 Percent Must Come from Reused and Recycled Materials

The Royal Danish Theatre has adopted a new ambitious goal for green theatre production. The goal is that from January 1, 2025, the theatre’s production of scenography, costumes, and props, measured in kilograms, must consist of at least 60 percent reused or recycled materials. This applies collectively to all new productions, co-productions, and revivals across art forms measured per year. The recycling percentage should gradually increase from 60 to 70 percent by the end of 2027.

The goal is set in continuation of our decision in 2024 to implement the GREEN PRODUCTION ACCOUNTING from the Theatre Green Book (TGB) on all the theatre’s productions, including revivals and co-productions. By implementing green production accounts on all productions, we can monitor progress and create a basis for the necessary decisions to ensure green theatre production.

The 60 percent reuse and recycling corresponds to the TGB intermediate standard, which should gradually increase to 70 percent by the end of 2027, which is the TGB advanced standard.

Green Accounts

From the second half of 2023 and for (almost) all of 2024, green accounts have been prepared for all new productions, revivals, and co-productions. Preliminary results show that the theatre is already producing green with a recycling percentage in 2024 of 63 percent in scenography, costume, and prop production. We still need to finalize the last productions, but we do not expect significant fluctuations.

This means that when we produce new and when we are the lead on a co-production, we are responsible for the green production and for calculating the recycling rate. When we receive a co-production and when we do a revival, only the newly produced elements are included and burden the theatre, as the other elements are considered reused.
