Theatre Green Toolkit
Carbon Literacy Training and Sustainability Consultants
Working sustainably needs teams to thoroughly understand the drivers for sustainable working, and the principles behind it. Widespread carbon literacy training is essential if the sector is to move rapidly towards more sustainable making.
Over the past couple of years theatre-specific Carbon Literacy Training has been developed. The trainers delivering these sessions are sometimes also sustainability consultants and can help organisations with their sustainability journey.
If you are an individual or freelancer looking for training and aren’t able to find anything suitable below, please do get in touch via admin@staging.theatregreenbook.nl. Sometimes there are places available on courses being run at organisations or venues.

Sustainability Training and Consultancy for the Performing Arts – Jennifer Taillefer
I work with arts organisations of all sizes, as well as individual artists to embed sustainable systems thinking into productions, operations and facilities. Using tools including the Theatre Green Book, I provide training, consultancy, and workshops to help investigate a range of topics such as creating environmental policies and action plans, embedding procurement strategies, impact tracking, and inspiring and engaging with teams and audiences around sustainability. All of my work is tailored to your specific circumstances whether you are a sole practitioner, a medium-scale producer, or working to integrate environmental aims across a large organisation. I have worked in theatre and live events for many years and so can bring a very practical and creative eye to making sustainable work. In addition to my theatre training and experience I am also a SEA with the International Society of Sustainability Professionals. I hope to support performing arts colleagues to create artistic work which not only captivates audiences but also contributes to a greener, healthier planet.

Charcoalblue Carbon Literacy Training
Now is the time for us to start making the changes required to make an impact. The first thing we all need is to have an understanding of what this all means and how we can start making changes. Charcoalblue’s Carbon Literacy Training gives you this base level of learning to kick start this for all of us, looking specifically at the theatre buildings we all use. Here’s how it’s structured:
PART 1 – THE SCIENCE BEHIND CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
We have created a dedicated website for this part. This will roughly two hours to complete.
PART 2 – NET ZERO, YOUR PLACE IN THE CRISIS AND WAYS FORWARD
An interactive session covering subjects from Net Zero to the Circular Economy and ways we as individuals can make positive changes to our own lives. These sessions are broken into two 2-hour sessions.
PART 3 – INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP PLEDGES
Following parts 1 & 2, you can then make pledges to lower your emissions. This is then sent to the Carbon Literacy Project for them to assess and accredit you.

Which is why we’re introducing our Carbon Literacy course, harnessing our years of experience making sustainable theatre to help other theatre makers reduce their environmental impact!

Carbon Literacy for Charities and Social Enterprises working in Public Leisure and Culture
Community Leisure UK (CLUK) has designed a new Carbon Literacy course, building on our expertise of supporting charities and social enterprises working across public leisure and culture in England, Scotland and Wales. A new partnership with the Workers Educational Association (WEA) means that this new training is open to anyone working in public leisure and culture.
The primary focus of the course will be on the management of public leisure and cultural facilities and will include case studies from other Charitable Trusts and Social Enterprises. You will gain a greater understanding of national and local priorities for net zero and what that means for public leisure and culture. We’ll also be discussing different policy contexts for those working in England, Wales and Scotland.
These courses are fully accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project, take just two, half days via virtual meetings and are extremely competitively priced at just £50 pp (including VAT). All levels of staff are welcome to attend the course as the focus is on what every individual can do in their own role to support net zero.
