Sustainability Roles

 

Many organisations are starting to add sustainability responsibilities into job descriptions, either within exisiting roles, or when creating new roles such as sustainability champion/manager/advisor. Each organisation will have different requirements and ideas of what they need, but please do feel free to take some of the below suggestions of responsibilities and adapt as needed.

Role and Task Suggestions

  • Create/lead the Green Team/Sustainability Working Group, creating agendas and chairing meetings.
  • Create Green Productions Agreements and engage all parties involved in the production in sustainable thinking early on in the process
  • Ensure all team members are Carbon Literacy Trained (including freelance staff)
  • Working with colleagues and departments across the organisation/production to create sustainability policies and action plans.
  • Collate the Theatre Green Book Production Calculator, Operations Tracker and Building Survey Tool.
  • Having and maintaining a good knowledge of the Theatre Green Book standards, and any other relevent environmental or sustainability frameworks, standards and guidance.
  • Deliver reports and verbal updates to a range of audiences, including Green Team, Producers, Facilities and Building Management, the Board, and the wider staff.
  • Work with the Communications Team to develop and implement a comms strategic plan for about the organisation’s/production’s green work.
  • Work with external partners, including local/council-based sustainability groups, co-producers and neighbouring or visiting venues, and attending external working groups such as the Theatre Green Book or ABTT Sustainability Committee.
  • If working with freelancers/not as part of an organisation: arrange regular Sustainability check-ins or lead a sustainability section as part of the Production and Design meetings.
  • Input ideas and concerns regarding sustainability into design conversations.
  • Work with your web developer or marketing team to update the website with sustainability updates and policies.
  • Lead on finding opportunities to incorporate sustainability into all areas of the organisation/production by
    embedding sustainable practices into everything we do.
  • Work with  all departments to deliver the data required for funding reporting, or reporting to investors.
  • If you have procurement policies: work to ebed sustainability into those.
  • Lead on a sustainability support programme of events, outreach activities and projects to support the green journey and engage staff and audiences in that journey.
  • Lead the post-show evaluation of the production/season against its Green Book targetIt is recognised that the [ROLE] doesn’t own sustainability as sustainability is a shared responsibility. But the [ROLE] will encourage everyone involved to take ownership of the role they play in contributing to a sustainable show/venue.

Experience Suggestions

  • Carbon Literacy trained
  • An understanding both of sustainability and theatre production
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of the path to net zero carbon/green theatre making
  • Previous experience in tracking and monitoring energy use and resource use, including carbon calculators
  • Competant with Excel and ability to produce reports/spreadsheets
  • Experience of sustainability initiatives and influences in the theatre sector
  • Proven ability to drive change
  • A degree in a sustainability-related subject or relevant experience in the field
  • Experience in producing reports or briefing papers on sustainability issues for internal and external
    stakeholders
  • Demonstrable ability to work within a complex environment with a range of different stakeholders
  • Able to inspire confidence, and develop effective working relationships internally and externally at all levels
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to work autonomously, prioritise activities, plan effectively and be
    solutions-focused.
  • Proven experience in implementing an Environmental Management System
